Auction Will Raise Money for Documentary Photography

Actor and photographer Aaron Eckhart will join Julia Dean, founder of the Julia Dean Photo Workshops, for an exhibit and silent auction of more than 100 iconic images taken by leading photographers from around the world, at the Stephen Cohen Gallery in Los Angeles on February 20, 2010.

The auction will feature images from such nationally and internationally known photographers as Alex Webb, Art Streiber, Brian Lanker, David Hume Kennerly, Don Barletti, Douglas Kirkland, Gerd Ludwig, Greg Gorman, Mary Ellen Mark, Nevada Wier, Phil Borges, Robert Farber, Ron Haviv and Sam Abell.

The auction will benefit Project 5: Photography for Social Change, which supports talented photojournalists and builds documentary photography through grants, exhibits and publications.

Project 5's silent auctions will raise money for a five-year series of photo documentary projects on five pressing social issues: child labor, educational access, health care, immigration, economic globalization. The February 2010 auction will raise funds to complete Dean's current collaborative project, Child Labor and the Global Village.

"Photographers look through their lenses at society and the environment, but they also see through their hearts," says Dean, the Los Angeles documentary photographer who founded Project 5. "As the economy takes a toll on the traditional patrons of documentary photography, such as newspapers and magazines, new support is needed. We must not lose a generation of important stories."

Pre-viewing: Photographs will be available for pre-viewing on Friday and Saturday (February19 & 20) prior to the auction. The $50 entrance ticket will be counted toward the price of a photograph. Tickets can be purchased in advance. Call 310-392-0909 or write to julia@photo4change.org.

1. What is this silent auction all about?

The silent auction will raise money for a socially concerned photo-documentary project, one of five projects that will be supported by Project 5: Photography for Social Change.

2. What is Project 5?

Project 5 spans five years, over which five silent auctions will be held to fund five socially concerned photography projects. Each project will involve a team of one or more talented photojournalists.

In an era of shrinking newspapers, magazines and other outlets for socially concerned photography, photographers are more in need of support than ever before.

Project 5's silent auctions will raise money for a five-year series of photo documentary projects on five pressing social issues. The first silent auction will raise funds to complete Dean's current international collaborative photo-documentary project: Child Labor and the Global Village.

3. What is Child Labor & the Global Village?

Child Labor & the Global Village started in 1998 with a team of 11 photographers and 2 writers who set out to document stories about, and solutions to, child labor.

4. What are the other four projects?

We plan to work in America for the four additional projects. The topics will include: educational access, health care, immigration, and economic globalization.

5. Who is in charge of this project?

Julia Dean, photographer and founder of the Julia Dean Photo Workshops in Los Angeles, is the director of the project. She works in conjunction with co-director, journalist Sarah Bachman.

6. How will money from the silent auction be used?

The money from the first auction will support the documenting of child labor, and solutions to child labor. Future auctions will be used to explore other issues of social concern in America. The amount of money raised by each silent auction will determine how many photographers will be selected for each project team.

7. What photographers' work will be featured in this auction?

Alex Webb, Art Streiber, Brian Lanker, Claudio Edinger, David Hume Kennerly, Don Barletti, Douglas Kirkland, Gerd Ludwig, Greg Gorman, Mary Ellen Mark, Nevada Wier, Phil Borges, Robert Farber, Ron Haviv, and Sam Abell, to name a few. Around 110 photographs will be exhibited and sold during the silent auction.

8. Where will the silent auction be held?

It will be held at the prestigious Stephen Cohen Gallery in Los Angeles.

He has told us that he will make every effort to be there! We do not have control over his schedule, however, and so we cannot guarantee that he will be present.
